About us
The British Science Association's (BSA) vision is a future where science is more relevant, representative and connected to society.

New funding for the 2026/2027 academic year provides support for UK schools in challenging circumstances to create opportunities for young people to engage with the concepts, skills and people behind research and innovation and is part of a wider six-year programme to engage the public with research and innovation across the UK.

Funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and delivered by the British Science Association, this new initiative will celebrate the full breadth of UK research and innovation – from science and technology, to the arts, humanities and social sciences – and the contribution it makes to improving lives and livelihoods. During the first year, some activity for this new programme will be delivered through the established annual British Science Week campaign – taking place from 5-14 March 2027.

The Engage Kit Box is reusable physical equipment kit posted to your school which contains a set of eight hands-on CREST challenges with cross-curricular links designed to support students to develop and practice the skills that underpin research and innovation.

Successful applicants that are awarded an Explore Kit Box can run the activities during British Science Week 2027 and throughout the 2026/2027 academic year. There is no cash award.

Submit only one application per school - you can apply for an Explore Star Kit Box, an Explore SuperStar Kit Box, or both, using this application form.

Before applying, you may wish to review the contents of each box to decide whether it is right for your setting. You can find out more about the contents of the boxes here:

Complete this application to be considered to receive a fully funded [free] Explore Kit Box. This is not an application for a cash grant.

CREST Star and Superstar Kit Box waiting lists
There are a limited number of Explore Star and Explore SuperStar Kit Boxes available for this academic year, and not all applications for a box will be successful.

In addition to the Explore Kit Boxes, there are similar all-in-one CREST kit boxes available to members of the Engage Teacher Network, funded by partners. Find out more about the CREST kit boxes here.

Demand for the CREST kit boxes is high and we operate a waiting list for both the Star and SuperStar boxes. You can register your interest to be added to a waiting list below. You will only be added to a waiting list if this application for an Explore Kit Box for the 2026/2027 academic year is unsuccessful.

When we have CREST kit boxes available in future academic years, we will get in touch with eligible schools on the waiting list.
This will not affect your application.
